Low-Dose Generic Yasmin For Fewer Side Effects

The popular birth control pill Yasmin (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol) is a low-dose birth control pill, which may be preferred by women who have experienced unpleasant side-effects from birth control pills with higher amounts of estrogen. Additionally, the progestin in generic Yasmin, drospirenone, may help improve acne in some women. Your physician will decide which birth control pill is best for you. The good news is that you have a lot of choices.

To clarify, Yasmin is also sold under the brand names Ocella, Zarah, and Syeda. Additionally, it is important to note that the name Yasmin is similar to “Yaz,” another widely popular birth control pill. However, Yasmin is low-dose, while Yasmin is ultra-low-dose. If you are looking for Yaz or are considering it you may find it here.

What is Generic Yasmin?

Generic Yasmin contains 3mg drospirenone and 0.03mg (30 micrograms) of ethinyl estradiol. It is a monophasic COC birth control pill. Generic Yasmin and other oral contraceptives that do not change the balance of the active ingredients in the pills through the cycle are called monophasic birth control pills. In addition, birth control pills that contain more than one type of hormone are called combination oral contraceptives (COC).

What Are the Benefits of Low-Dose Birth Control Pills?

Low-dose and ultra-low-dose birth control pills may be more tolerable for women who have had side effects from higher doses of estrogen in other birth control pills. Women can expect lighter periods with low-dose and ultra-low-dose birth control pills.

There are 3 categories of COC: standard dose, low-dose, and ultra-low-dose. A standard dose birth control pill may have between 35-40 micrograms (mcg) of estrogen. Birth control pills that have 35mcg or less of estrogen are considered “low dose”. Ultra-low-dose birth control pills contain 20mcg or less of estrogen.

How Does Generic Yasmin Work?

The active ingredients estrogen and progestin prevent both ovulation and the sperm from reaching the egg.

Also, if the first two strategies of preventing pregnancy do not work, there’s a last line of defense. For the particularly strong “swimmer” and a very eager egg who do succeed at fertilization, the egg will have a “tough” time attaching to the uterus. How’s that? Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone in the pill prevent the thickening of the uterine lining which is required for the attachment of a fertilized egg.

Although no contraceptive is 100% effective, drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol and other hormonal oral contraceptives are considered 91 percent effective when taken as instructed, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
