Albuterol is the active ingredient in brand Proventil Syrup. It is a bronchodilator that works by relaxing and opening air passages to the lungs. The syrup may be prescribed to adults and children 2 years of age and older. Albuterol prevents and treats difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness caused by lung diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). For regular treatment for lung disease or to prevent symptoms, the syrup is usually taken 3 or 4 times per day. But there are restrictions on the amounts children should take.
